Dear Fellow Railroader:
This survey research in which we ask you for your input, studies what is actually going on regarding the pilot projects for the operation of Remote Control Locomotives (RCLs) by means of portable Remote Control Devices (RCDs). The RCDs have various trade names including BeltPack TM, AccuSpeed TM, etc. The study is a part of a factual research project by "rails" for "rails." It has no connection with any railroad, union, supplier of equipment, or government agency. It is simply an exercise in grassroots democracy and communication among us railroaders. We are interested only in your personal experiences, observations, and views. There can be no right or wrong answers. We all sound off on the job. Now, you can sound off to a wider, continental audience of fellow railroaders.
Most people say they enjoy and appreciate taking part in a study of this kind because it gives them a chance to express their experiences and thoughts on matters of importance to them and their fellow employees. Of course, all the information you provide on this questionnaire will be reported COMPLETELY ANONYMOUSLY, and NO PERSONAL IDENTIFIERS will be reported (e.g., "a tall, dark, and handsome engine foreman on the Cotton Belt with a chaw in his cheek, said").
Please answer the questions frankly and completely. Do not skip any questions. Please take enough time to consider each question carefully. Your assistance and frank answers will be much appreciated and will help all of us "rails" understand better this important topic.
A compilation of all answers will be posted on our website. Because of the sometimes arbitrary and harsh, military style discipline on the railroads, we cannot reveal our real names.
Fraternally yours,
The Eugene Victor Debs Committee
